At age 16, Pete enlisted in the Army during World War II. After competing training, the Army discovered he was under age and delayed deployment over seas until he came of age. Initially Pete was assigned to the Infantry seeing action in the Philippines, however, due to his mechanical skills he was assigned to the motor pool. He shared that he was on a ship headed for Japan when the war ended. After the war ended, he served at the General Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. While there he worked in the motor pool and maintained General MacArthur’s military vehicle.
