Betty Joann Ellis

Betty Joann Ellis, 92, of Henlawson, WV went home to the Lord on Friday September 23^rd, 2022. Born on February 18^th, 1930, in Omar, WV, she was the daughter of the late Herman “Curly” Myers and Martha (James) Myers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Jimmy “Burrhead” Ellis and their infant son, James Mark Ellis, as well as two brothers: Ballard “Holly” Smith and William Myers.

Joann took almost as much pleasure and pride in typing up the weekly bulletin for the Yuma Church of Christ, where she was a member for many years, as she did ‘cheating’ at every card game and round of dominoes she could talk someone into playing with her. She loved to tell people that she was a descendant of the outlaw Jesse James, and often blamed her card playing tactics on that heritage. She loved gardening with her family and could eat tomatoes as fast as anyone could pick them, always carrying a little salt in her pocket just in case.  Joann never met a word search she couldn’t best, and she never said no to any stray dog, cat, or person who needed a little help.

She was the loving mother to her son Jeff (Kathy) Ellis, as well as two honorary sons, Andy Johnston, and Kent Blevins. She is also survived by her grandchildren Emily Ellis, Andrew (Summer) Ellis, Martha Ellis, and James Ellis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Akers-James Funeral Home with Kent Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Chapmanville, WV. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the service, Saturday at the funeral home.
