Byron "Dink" Stump

Byron Dinsmore “Dink” Stump 76, of Mullens departed this life at Bowers Hospice House on Sunday November 5, 2023.

He was born January 4, 1947, in Mullens, WV. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles S. Stump and Eva Grace Stump; his stepmother, Mildred M. Stump; brothers, William R. Stump and Charles S. Stump Jr; and his in-laws, Eugene L. Neal and Margaret “Billie” Knight Neal.

Dink was a 1965 graduate of Mullens High School, attended Beckley College, and graduated from Morris Harvey College with a B.S degree in Education.

He was a lifelong educator for Wyoming County Schools, where he also served as a football, wrestling, and basketball coach for several years, former President of the Mullens Lions Club, an inducted Knight of the Golden Horseshoe Society, member of the West Virginia Education Association, and a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Mullens. Dink was known for his love of automobiles, go-cart racing and WVU athletics.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Karolyn N. Stump, his children Alice (Darren) Akers of Logan, WV, and Samuel (Alycia) Stump of Mullens, WV. His grandchildren William (Abigail Johnson) Akers, McKenzie Akers, Brighid Stump and Finny Stump. Dink was loved by many and never met a stranger.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 10, 2023. The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. prior to the 1 p.m. service at The First Presbyterian Church of Mullens, WV.  Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, WV.

Serving as pallbearers are Samuel Stump, Darren Akers, William Akers, Kent McBride, Clint Houck, John Michael Morgan.  Honorary pallbearers will be Tim Snyder and Andy Canterbury.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Mullens or a charity of your choice.
