Christine Mathis 76 of Verdunville went home to be with the Lord, Thursday May 8, 2008 at her residence surrounded by her family. Born November 30, 1931, she was the daughter of the late George R. and Pearl (Baisden) Avis. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years Lonnie Mathis, Jr., on January 26, 2008, brothers, Thomas Avis, Johnny Avis, Leslie Avis, Okey Avis, Lawrence Avis and Leonard Avis, sisters Betty J. Vance, Mona Browning, Lucille Naugle, Violet Avis, Lola Branch, Hazel Adkins. She is survived by her children: Frances (James Tennis) Ford of Hurricane, Robert (Lanis) Mathis of Chapmanville, Johnny Mathis of Mineral, Va., Barbara Sue (Charles David) Conley of Dingess, Debra (Richard) Morgenstern of Stafford, Va. She was also "mommy" to two grandsons that she and her husband raised as their own, John Ashley Mathis of Chapmanville and Christopher Chadwick (Meaghan) Mathis of Raleigh, N.C. Additional grandchildren are James T. (Tina) Ford, Jr. of Ashburn, Va., Robert Wade (Jennifer) Mathis of Washington, D.C., David L. and Michael Mathis of Annadale, Va., Lonnie David (Linda Renea) Conley of Delbarton, Jason (Lori) Mathis of Holden and Katelyn Morrell of Stafford, Va. Two step-grandchildren: Brian and Aaron Morgenstern of Stafford, Va. Christine also had eight great-grandchildren: Ashley Paige, Christopher and Jonathan Mathis, Caleb and Ryan Conley, Jordan and Jace Mathis and Hunter Ford. Her step-great grandchildren: Ashley (Jason) and Codey Curtis. She is also survived by one sister, Alice A. Bryant of King Shoals, two brother-in-laws: Thomas F. (Alice) Mathis of Chapmanville and Jimmie Vance of Verdunville, four sister-in-laws: Ruby (Bernice) Richardson of Whitman, Daisy Adkins of Verdunville, Carol (Bernie) Townsend of Berea, Ohio and Rosalie (Charles "Butch") Leef of Alderson and a host of neices, nephews, cousins, church family and friends. She was also blessed with her special neighbors, Mark, Sherry and Kyle Porter. Christine was a member of the 14 Whitman Freewill Baptist Church. She was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother who loved to to cook and take care ogf her family. In addition to raising her children, she was also a "mom" to all the neighborhood children who loved to spend time with her. Visitation will be Sunday May 11, 2008 from 6:00 until 9:00 P.M. at James Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Monday May 12, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at James Funeral Home with Rev. Alvis Porter, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Condolences may be sent to www.jamesfh.com.
