On June 24th, 2021, Jeannette Anne (Jane Anne) Powell Watkins departed this earth to receive her heavenly glory. Born on February 25, 1932 to parents, Jeannette and James Powell, she was a 1963 graduate of Marshall University Teachers College, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Jane was just shy of celebrating her 90th birthday. She was married to Harold Watkins, her great love and best friend, and inherited a stepson Michael Craig Watkins (Midge) and granddaughter, Sarah. Jane was baptized at First Christian Church when she was 12-years-old and was a faithful member there her entire life. Janeâs church was a very important to her; she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School, and served as President of the Ladyâs Circle group. She also enjoyed participating in ladyâs fellowship at the First Presbyterian Church as well as the Justice Christian Church.
If one could epitomize Janeâs life summarily, it would be that hers was a life of service. She began her career as a teacher at Ethel Grade School and then continued at Stirrat Grade School. She later worked at the Logan County Board of Education as Director of Social Studies for Logan County and was honored by the West Virginia Department of Education for her outstanding service to The Golden Horseshoe Program. She was a member of both the Delta Kappa Gamma Womenâs Educational Society as well as the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority, where she served a stint as treasurer. Jane was active and served as Logan Chairman, West Virginia State Chairman, and Southwestern District Chairman of the Junior Womenâs Clubs of West Virginia. In her younger years, she was selected as one of the Outstanding Young Women of America in recognition of her exceptional ability, accomplishments, and service to her community, country, and profession. She was a lifetime member of both the Order of the Eastern Star and Logan Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.
Jane enjoyed a mean hand of cards and greatly enjoyed time with her buddies over a competitive game! She was more often declared a victor, than not! Jane had a large family of friends whom she loved dearly. She checked on them daily to be sure they were well cared for and safe. She was very dedicated to her rescue dog, Tiffany. Jane quietly spread lots of love and touched many folks around her. She will live on in our hearts and memories till weâre joined together in the great beyond! Rest in peace, Jane! Godspeed!
