John Troy Schafer, 75, of Chapmanville, West Virginia, passed away on July 13, 2023. Born on April 9, 1948, in Oakland, California, John was a proud veteran of the United States Armed Forces, having served in both the United States Marine Corps and the US Army during the Vietnam War.
 
John was an outgoing, caring, forgiving, and funny man. He had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back. A loving father of seven children, he cherished his role as a parent. John is survived by his son Troy Schafer of Austin, Texas, his daughters Sarah Schafer of Chapmanville, West Virginia, Erin Schafer, Katy Schafer, and Ashley Schafer of Rancho Cordova, California. He is also survived by his loving brother Jerry Schafer and sister-in-law Jayne Schafer of Chapmanville, West Virginia, as well as seven grandchildren.
 
John had a passion for cooking, camping, and fishing. He also had a keen interest in collecting Native American artifacts and relics from the Civil War. His hobbies reflected his appreciation for history and his love for the great outdoors.
 
A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held on Tuesday, July 18th, at 11 am at Chief Logan State Park, located at 376 Little Buffalo Creek Rd, Logan, West Virginia 25601. Friends and family are invited to attend and pay their respects.
 
In honor of John Schafer's service to his country, contributions can be made to a charity of your choice that supports United States veterans. John believed in the importance of assisting and honoring those who have served our nation.
 
John Schafer will forever be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and his dedication to his family and country. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him.
