Lucy Small

August 14, 1931 — May 1, 2024

Logan, WV

Lucy Marie Small, born and raised in Logan, WV, drew her last breath on May 1, 2024after 92 beautiful years of life.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Deward Small; parents James and Icy Marie Short Napier; four sisters: Faye Rollins, Garnet Vance, Mazie Browning, Lois Amburgey; brother Lacy Proffitt; daughter, Rhonda Gent; granddaughter, Tilah Moore and two sons-in-law, Jerry Kennedy and George Owens, Jr.  

Lucy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a woman that drew extraordinary strength from her faith in the Lord.  She was a long-standing member of the Logan Church of the Nazarene and also attended the West Logan Church of God.  She spent her 35 year professional career as a sales clerk and manager for Rite Aid and retired in 2010.  In her spare time, she was an avid readercrossword puzzle solverchurch choir singer, phenomenal cook and the matriarchal mentor, leader and fierce protector of her large family.    

She is survived by 3 daughters: Debbie Owens, Karen Kennedy,Jennifer Phipps and husband Dennis Phipps; several nieces and nephews; 8 grandchildrenChris Gent and wife Shelly, Stefanie Thorne and husband Allen, Linzy, Trey and Chaz Owens and wife Julie, Natasha Vallet, Simon Phipps, Sarah Hart and husband Ryan Hart; 8 great grandchildren: Jason McCloud, Jesse Fleming, Ashleigh Preece, Evan and Reagan Gent, Kennedy ValletEliza and Felicity Owens.

Lucy will always be fondly remembered by family and friends as a woman of great faith and endless amounts of love and compassion for family and friends.  Shwas the warmest host for all holidays, birthdays, special occasions and Sunday dinners that was filled with life stories and lessons from her past.    

We ask those available to come share some of their favorite stories of Lucy as a celebration of her life will be held at Akers-James Funeral Home in Logan, WV on Monday, May 6th, 2024.  Visitation will be 11am – 1pm followed by the Service.  The burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Pecks Mill, WV.  Flowers or online condolences can be given at www.jamesfh.com
