Mario Varassi

Mario Daniel Varassi passed away from this life Saturday morning February 16, 2008 at Logan Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Mario Varassi age 78 of Chapmanville, formerly a resident of Holden for many years. A professing Christian, Mr. Varassi attended worship services and fellowship activities at the First Baptist Church of Logan. The son of the late Ameda (Belladonna) and Henry Varassi, Mr. Varassi was born February 1, 1930 in Logan, WV. He was preceded in death in 1991, by his wife of 42 years Peggy Ann (Adkins) Varassi, and in 2007 by their daughter Karen Ameda Varassi. Mr. Varassi is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Daneen (Keith) Siracuse of Cary, N.C. and Mrs. Kristi (Wyatt) Scaggs of Mitchell Heights, and three grandchildren Andrea Milan Siracuse, a freshman at North Carolina State University, and Neal III and Katie Scaggs, both students at Logan High School. Visitation will be held at James Funeral Home on Monday morning February 18, 2008 beginning at 11:00 A.M. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 P.M. at James Funeral Home at Aracoma with Rev. J. Gregg Hickman officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens with military graveside rites conducted. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Logan. Mario Varassi was a basketball enthusiast and local standout having been selected twice to the West Virginia High School All-State Basketball Team. During his years of active service, he was a member of the Army's special services basketball team that traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Mr. Varassi's military awards included the Good Conduct and National Defense Service Medals. He was also later inducted into Logan County's Sports Hall of Fame.
