Patricia McClure

August 9, 1937 — July 23, 2023

Logan, WV

Patricia “Peggy” Graham McClure, 85, of Logan, WV passed on to her heavenly home on July 23, 2023, at her residence.

Peggy was born in Logan, WV, on August 9, 1937, the daughter of the late Ralph James Graham and Tootsie Blankenship Graham.

Peggy and her husband, Ronald Bruce McClure, celebrated 64 years together last December. In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter, Ronna McClure of Logan, daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Bennie Prichard of Chapmanville, and granddaughter, Skylar Prichard Lloyd and her husband, Daniel Lloyd, of Troutville, VA.

Peggy always strived to live a “life well-lived” by impacting those around her in a positive and encouraging way to benefit the success of others. She enjoyed time with family and friends, her church family, her chosen profession, traveling, and volunteering.

She loved the Lord and her church family. She became a member of West Logan Missionary Baptist Church in 1945 as a young girl, a membership spanning 78 years. Peggy served where she was needed including Sunday School Director, Bible School Director, Sunday School Teacher, Camp Cowen Church Camp Counselor, Baptist Youth Fellowship Director, and Church Treasurer. During the last decade, being homebound, she sincerely missed being in her church.

Peggy attended the West Logan School and Logan Central Jr. High. She graduated from Logan Senior High School in 1955. She became the first in her family to earn a college degree, graduating with a teaching degree in 1959 from Marshall College and setting the tradition for others in her extended family.

She began her 35-year career in education as an art teacher at Logan High School before completing a MA in Business Education and switching to business courses of typing and shorthand. She loved her students and often hosted events for her homeroom and The Topsy Turvy Club which she sponsored.

Peggy was recruited to the business education program at Logan Branch of Marshall University in 1968. When the MU Logan Branch became Southern WV Community College in 1971, Peggy was one of the original faculty. Peggy continued her education with a certificate in administration from the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL. She served as Business Department Chairperson and various other capacities at Logan, Williamson, and Boone Campuses before retiring in 1994 from her position as Dean of the Boone Campus. While at Southern, she wrote grants, secured governmental funding, worked toward campus growth and improvement, and, as she had as a high school teacher, she loved her students and promoted their successes. One of her favorite initiatives was promoting professional secretarial programs to recognize hard-working professional assistants.

After her retirement, Mrs. McClure continued to contribute her expertise as a director on the West Virginia Board of Education and the West Virginia State University Board of Directors.

Peggy was a proud supporter of Marshall University serving on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and serving as Logan Chapter President for many years. She and her husband, Ron, attended MU alumni functions and sporting events until health issues interfered. If it was possible to tune in somehow, though, they were listening.

Peggy had also served on the Logan Country Club Board of Directors and truly enjoyed social events with her husband. Additionally, she had served on the Homeowners Association Board for Crescent Towers II in North Myrtle Beach, SC.

Peggy was a devoted wife and mother, and she loved her extended family. In later years, she was specifically devoted to her granddaughter whom she adored. In mutual admiration, her granddaughter, Skylar, celebrated her wedding with Peggy and Ron in their home so the grandparents could enjoy this milestone with Skylar and her new husband, Daniel, and his family.

Visitation will be on Thursday, July 27 from 11 am-1 pm at the Akers-James Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life Service at 1 pm led by her longtime Pastor, Robert Morris. Burial will be on Friday, July 28 at 10 am at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Peggy advocated for working adults seeking additional training to improve their lives during her entire career. A scholarship account for these efforts is being established in the name of Peggy Graham McClure Scholarship Fund. If you wish to contribute to these efforts, you may send contributions to Peggy Graham McClure Scholarship Fund, PO Box 31, Logan, WV 25601.
