Philip C. Marsh, 71, of McConnell, WV went home to be with the Lord on October 16, 2008. He passed away due to complications following surgery.
Mr. Marsh was born on May 26, 1937 in Chauncy, WV. He was the son of the late Wesley âBrownieâ Marsh and Madge Moore. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Marsh and four sisters, Sharon Lynn Marsh, Patricia Workman, Kay Marsh and Barbara Browning.
Those who will treasure his memory include his loving wife of 50 years, Linda, his daughter, Michelle of Columbus, Ohio, his son, Philip of Charleston, WV, one sister, Ann Courtney of Detroit, Michigan and two brothers Wesley âTubbyâ Marsh of Switzer, Richard Marsh of Man and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Carson of Charleston, WV.
Mr. Marsh was a 1955 graduate of Logan High School where he played football and baseball. He was a three year letterman in football and lettered in baseball in 1955. In 1961 he entered the United States Army and served our country as a Military Policeman during his tour of duty in South Korea. He received an honorable discharge in 1963.
Before entering the service Mr. Marsh was employed by Guyan Machinery (1955-1961). Upon his return from service he was employed by Smith Transfer in Huntington, WV (1963-1964). In 1964 he began his career in mining with Amherst Coal Company/Arch Coal Company where he retired in 1994 as the Warehouse Manager.
Mr. Marshâs service to the youth of Logan County is well known. This passion first began when he became the scout master of the Chauncey Boy Scout Troop in 1954, one year before his graduation from high school. He was the youngest scout master in the history of the Chief Cornstalk Counsel. While serving as scout master he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. This is the highest award given to a volunteer by the Boy Scouts of America.
Upon his return from the service Mr. Marsh began officiating little league baseball and shortly thereafter began coaching in the Logan Little League. His contribution to the youth of Logan County continued for over 20 years where he coached in the Logan Midget Football League, Logan Buddy League Basketball and the Logan Babe Ruth League. Mr. Marsh coached a Buddy League Basketball All-Star team in Florida, a Logan Little League All-Star team in the West Virginia State Tournament and a West Virginia Babe Ruth State Championship team. This team later competed in the Ohio Valley Regional Tournament in Niles, Michigan.
Mr. Marshâs hard work and dedication continues to be seen today through the successful lives of those men that he influenced over the course of his life and the athletic facilities he helped to create.
Services for Mr. Marsh will be held on Monday, October 20 at 11:00 a.m. at the Central United Baptist Church with Pastors Glen White and Randy Skeens officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Pecks Mill.
Pallbearers will be Mr. Marshâs friends and family members.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Sunday evening. This will also be at Central Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers the Marsh family has asked that donations be made in their name to the Logan High School Baseball Booster Club.
