Roberta Nell âBertieâ Damron of Mitchell Heights departed this life Monday, April 2, 2007, at her residence. Born May 11, 1930, at Leet, in Lincoln County, she was the first daughter of the late Lewis Arthur and Minerva Jane Vannatter Stowers. Also preceding her in death was her husband of 27 years, Oval Dewey Damron; her son, Robert Arthur Damron; a daughter, Kathy Lynn Riffe; a daughter-in-law, Carole Damron; brothers, Truman and Henry Stowers, and a sister, Viola Dean Damron.
Survivors include her son, William (Sue) Damron of London, Ky.; daughter, Susan (David) Johnson of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; grandchildren, James Spurlock, John Robert Damron and Will Damron, all of Charleston, Amy (Mark) Abbott and Lindsey Damron, both of London, and Camron and Bret Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn.; great-granddaughter, Alexandra Abbott of London; step-daughters, Lana Kingery of Arizona and Jackie Johnson of Oregon; son-in-law, Bill Riffe of Charleston; brothers, Kennie Stowers of Ravenswood, Scott Stowers of Melrose, Mass., Thomas Stowers of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Stephen Stowers of Harts; sisters, Jayne Thomas of Big Creek, Linda Metten of Nitro, and Virginia Rayburn of Chapmanville, and a host of extended family members and numerous friends.
Roberta Nell Stowers graduated from Chapmanville High School as valedictorian of the Class of 1947. She also graduated from Huntington Business College. Her first job at the tender age of 17 was as secretary at Damron and Damron Law Office in Logan. This job proved to be the most memorable of her life for it was there that she met and fell in love with the handsome, young lawyer, Oval Damron, whom she married on April 18, 1949.
She also worked for many years for the Logan County Board of Education as school secretary at Mill Creek, Crooked Creek, Big Creek and Logan Grade. She was also the secretary for the Rev. Michael Rush at the First Christian Church in Logan.
Roberta was an active member of the Logan Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Pecks Mill. She was serving as secretary of the Primary organization at the time of her death and had previously served as counselor and historian in the Relief Society, the womenâs auxiliary of the Church. She also loved singing in the church choir.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 6, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints at Pecks Mill with Bishop Joseph H. justice conducting. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
