Shirley Hairston Gordon, affectionately known as âMama Shirlâ was born on November 24, 1947 in Logan, WV to the late Mr. John Henry Hairston and the late Mrs. Dorothy L. Hairston. On Saturday, August 3, 2019, Mama Shirl heardthe voice of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ call her name to move into her heavenly mansion. She hastened to his call and departed this earthly life at seventy-one (71) years old. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents; husband â Mr. Cornelius Gordon; three (3) brothersâ Mr. John âChipâ, Freddie, and Gregory Hairston; and sister â Ms. Regina Hairston.
She was a true believer in Christ and faithful member of Omar First Baptist in Omar, WV where she served as head of the kitchen. Mama Shirl worked for 10 years at WP Coal Company. After 10 years as a prep cook manager at Shoneys, she retired. She was a devoted wife and homemaker. She dedicated her time and energy to caring for the needs of her husband, children, grandchildren, and many others. Mama Shirl lived her life to the fullest and her presence, laughter, style, and sense of humor will truly be missed.
She leaves to cherish many sweet memories her children, Mr. Patrick Hairston (Crystal) of Charleston, WV, Ms. Diana Hairston of Holden, WV, Mrs. Angela Hampton (Mark) of Aracoma, WV, Mrs. Felicia Reynolds (Andrew), Mr. Brandon Hairston (Wynona), Miss Kelicia Hairston, Mr. Jamall Hairston, Miss Sierre Hairston, Miss Jada Hairston - all of Omar, WV; siblings Mr. Kenneth, Donald (Ida), Jeff (Carla), Chris (Toni), Rodney (Judy) and Joey Hairston â all of Douglasville, GA, Dr. Debra Hurley (Greg) of Douglasville, GA, and Mr. David Mollett (Leila) of Columbia, SC; special friends Ms. Sarah Roach and Mr. Holbert Tucker; eleven (11) grandchildren, six (6) great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 9, 2019 at Akers-James Funeral Home with Rev. Philemon H. Dillard Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home.
