Willis “Dick” Carter Jr., born December 30, 1948, departed this life October 15, 2022 when his 73 year journey was finished at 2:22 a.m. at Logan Regional Medical Center.
He was a 1968 graduate of Logan Senior High School. Willis was a proud United States Marine, serving from November 30, 1968, to October 6, 1969, to which 8 months and 24 days was served in the Vietnam War. He was a true Marine to his very core, and where he was wounded, he was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. Willis loved his country and his American flag that flies proudly at his home. He worked for General Motors until 1974, when he started working as a coal miner. He was very well known in his community and loved by so very many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Euna (Tomblin) Carter; In-laws, Woodrow and Ellen (Bryant) Adkins; his son, Jonathan Wood Carter; sons-in-law, Roger Adkins Jr, and Alonzo Tomblin; brothers, James Ricky, and Ralph Carter Sr.; sisters, Essie Jo, and Dosha Carter; sister-in-law, Sherry Adkins; brothers-in-law, Raymond Hanna, Jerry Nelson, Alvin Dale, James “Big Jim” Marcum, Harvey Carter, Franklin Dee Adkins, Thomas Adkins, Franklin “Bone” Adkins, Balford “Sam” Stallard, Robert Olson, and Dewey Dillon; nephews, Brennan Browning, and Jared Carter; nieces, Susan Legg, Rebecca Hannah, Breanna Carter, and Andrea “Punkin” Tomblin.
Those left to love, remember, and cherish him are his loving wife of 51 years and 11 months, Gay Carter; daughters, Ellen (Dewey Keith) Fetters, Renee (Eddie Horne) Adkins, and Terri Tomblin; son, Joseph (Angela King) Carter; sisters, Jessie Hannah, and Donnretta Carter; sisters-in-law, Sherlene Olson, Iva (Rally) Stallard, Sherry (Mary Ann Bevins) Marcum; Mary Iris Adkins, and Vicky Kinder Carter; grandsons, Zachary (Aundrea Jade) Adkins, Zayne Adkins, Tanner Carter, and Isaiah Tomblin; granddaughters, Taylor (Evan Gibson) Carter, Zoe (Dereck Price) Adkins, Rachelle (Daniel) Craddock, and Isabella Tomblin; great-grandsons, Jasper and Jamesyn Price, Brandon (Samantha Brewer) Kinser, and Cooper and Gunner Craddock; great-granddaughters, Tori (Andy Maynard) Spry, Veralynn Legg, Journee Price, and Rockelle Gibson; great-great-grandson, Creed Maynard; special friends, Amy Nichols, Sharden Sammons, Jerry Thompson, and Clifford “Snip” Watkins. Willis is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews that he loved and cherished so much.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 20, 2022, at Akers-James Funeral Home with Pastor Elbert Collins Jr. officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Adkins Cemetery at Verdunville. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, October 19, 2022, also at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Zachary Adkins, Isaiah Tomblin, Brent Osborn, Eddie Horne, Luke Marcum, and Scott Adkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Evan Gibson, Jason Adkins, Don Sawyers, Clifford “Snip” Watkins, Sharden Sammons, Jerry Thompson, Robert “Bob” Messer, Dewey Keith Fetters, and David Lee Browning.
